An eSIM install sounds technical, but it's honestly easier than setting up a new WiFi network. You buy a plan, get a QR code, scan it, and you're done. Here's the exact process for iPhone and Android.
Before You Start
- Make sure you're on WiFi (you're downloading a SIM profile โ don't burn your cellular data)
- Your phone must be unlocked (most modern phones are)
- Have your QR code ready โ you got it by email when you bought your plan
- Your phone should be on iOS 12.1+ or Android 10+ (99% of phones in use today qualify)
๐ฑ iPhone Installation
Open Settings โ Cellular โ Add eSIM (or "Add Cellular Plan" on older iOS).
Tap "Use QR Code". Your camera opens. Scan the QR code from your email.
If scanning fails (screen glare, small print), tap "Enter Details Manually" and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your email.
Label the plan โ call it "VayaConData" or "Travel" so you can tell it apart from your home line.
Set your default line. Choose: which line for calls, which for SMS, which for data. For travel, set data, calls, and SMS to the VayaConData eSIM and turn off data roaming on your home SIM (also turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching" to avoid surprise roaming).
๐ค Android Installation
Open Settings โ Network & Internet โ SIMs (wording varies slightly by manufacturer: Samsung = "Connections โ SIM card manager", Pixel = "Network & internet โ SIMs").
Tap "Add eSIM" or the + icon.
Choose "Download a SIM instead" โ "Scan QR code". Point the camera at your QR code.
Follow the prompts. The profile downloads (this takes 30-60 seconds on WiFi).
Name the plan "VayaConData" and set it as your data, calls, and SMS SIM while in Europe, with data roaming turned off on your physical SIM.
Common Problems & Fixes
Try the "Enter Details Manually" option (SM-DP+ address + activation code). Make sure there's no glare on your screen. Brightness to 100% helps.
Restart your phone. If it persists, remove the eSIM profile (Settings โ Cellular โ the plan โ Remove) and re-add it from scratch. Most issues are resolved by a fresh install on WiFi.
Check three things: (1) Data Roaming ON for the eSIM, (2) Data line set to the eSIM, (3) Airplane mode toggled off (your phone may have "stuck" during landing). Then restart once.
This usually means your plan hasn't started yet. VayaConData plans activate on first connection to a European network โ if you're still at home, that's expected. Check the network list; if you see an Orange/EU network, connect to it.
When Does My Plan Start?
This is the most common question. For VayaConData: your plan activates when you first connect to a European network โ not when you buy, not when you scan the QR.
That means you can install everything at home on WiFi, land in Paris, and your 31-day timer starts the moment you connect. Buy now, travel later. No wasted days.
